Local students unveil art exhibition at private opening

21st June 2024

Dartmouth Academy GCSE students put on a show at The Flavel

Students from Dartmouth Academy, part of Education South West, are now showcasing their artwork at The Flavel in the town centre.  The arts centre is dedicated to the advancement of the education of the public in the arts.

The Flavel is showcasing the artwork of local Year 11 GCSE Art & Design and Photography students in their annual summer exhibition.  The students have created some very personal works after picking individual themes for their pieces and are excited for a wider audience to enjoy the results of their hard work.

The exhibition kicked off with a private viewing for school staff and friends and family of the students on Monday the 17th of June which was also attended by the town Mayor, David Wells.  The artwork will remain on display for another couple of weeks and Dartmouth Academy is encouraging people from the local community to visit and support the students by writing in the visitors’ book.

The Art & Design curriculum at Dartmouth Academy is designed to develop in children a historical and cultural perspective of a variety of visual art forms, including painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture.  They also explore ideas about what makes art aesthetically pleasing or satisfying and develop a capacity for judging and explaining judgements, as well as being able to participate in broader philosophical conversations about, for example, what constitutes art.

Paul Giradot, Headteacher at Dartmouth Academy said:

“I am so proud of all our Art & Design and Photography students for their creativity and dedication, both shine through in this exhibition of their work.  I am also grateful to The Flavel for allowing our students the opportunity to show off their high-quality work in a proper gallery space.  It’s lovely to see how the town supports the talents of its young people.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:

“I am delighted that Dartmouth students get to put on an exhibition in the heart of the town.  I know they have poured everything into their artwork, and I encourage everyone to go and take a look in The Flavel in the coming weeks.”
